Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gymnodinium is Gymnodinium fuscum (Ehrenberg) F.Stein.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Protodinium simplex Lohmann

Type locality: Baltic Sea near Kiel (Silva 1996-to date).
