According to Okolodkov (2005: 292), Peridinium divergens obtusum G. Karst 1906 is the basionym of this species and he cites Peridinium obtusum J. Schill. 1937 as a synonym. - (03 October 2006) - G.M. Guiry
Dodge (1982: 166) notes this species is of the sub-genus Protoperidinium, group Orthoperidinium and section Conica. Tomas (1996: 561) notes the authority of this species as (Karsten) Balech. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
