Okolodkov (2005: 292) agrees with Sournia (1990) that the combination Protoperidinium obtusum (G.Karst.) Balech 1988 is invalid, since it was published earlier by Parke & Dodge (1976). - (03 October 2006) - G.M. Guiry

According to Okolodkov (2005: 292), Peridinium divergens obtusum G. Karst 1906 is the basionym of this species and he cites Peridinium obtusum J. Schill. 1937 as a synonym.
