The type species (lectotype) of the genus Chara is Chara vulgaris Linnaeus.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chara subspinosa Ruprecht.

Adjective A (Latin), hispid, covered with coarse rigid erect hairs or bristles harsh to the touch [or seeming so] (Stearn 1973).
