Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gymnodinium is Gymnodinium fuscum (Ehrenberg) F.Stein.

Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Kapelodinium vestifici (Schütt) Boutrup, Moestrup & Daugbjerg

Origin of species name
Noun (Latin), of the tailor [genitive singular of vestificus: vestis-facio]; perhaps referring to a tailor's needle. (Lewis & Short 1890).
