Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Platoma is Platoma cyclocolpum (Montagne) F.Schmitz.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Predaea tenuis (M.Howe & W.R.Taylor) Bula-Meyer.

Type Information
Type locality: "Dredged, Cabo Frio, Hassler Expedition 1043g and 1043g', apparently associated with Halymenia rosea and H. vinacea. Type, the larger specimen (1043g)."; (Howe & Taylor 1931: 33) Type: Hassler Expedition 1043b; 1872; dredged; FH; (Index Nominum Algarum) Notes: According to GuimarĂ£es & Amado-Filho (2008: 386), the holotype is in NY and it was collected in January 1872.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), thin, fine, slender (Stearn 1973).
