Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gymnodinium is Gymnodinium fuscum (Ehrenberg) F.Stein.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pyrocystis lunula (F.Schütt) F.Schütt.

Type Information
Type locality: Atlantic Ocean; (Index Nominum Algarum) Notes: Ostsee, Nordsee, Mittelmeer, Atlantic (INA).

Origin of Species Name
Noun (Latin), diminutive of luna, moon (Brown 1946).
