Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Hypnea is Hypnea musciformis (Wulfen) J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Mychodea pusilla (Harvey) J.Agardh.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), fastigiate, with branches clustered, parallel and erect, giving a narrow elongated habit (occasionally meaning branched reaching to the same height) (Stearn 1973).
