The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.
Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Neosiphonia sertularioides (Grateloup) K.W.Nam & P.J.Kang
No synonyms are currently included in AlgaeBase.
According to Womersley (2003: 186) Polysiphonia macrarthra Zanardini is probably a synonym of Polysiphonia sertularioides (Grateloup) J. Agardh as judged from a photograph of the type; the type in Herb. Zanardini, Museo Civico, Venice has not been available on loan.
This is a marine species.
Type locality: Hab. Georgetown Tasmaniae - (Miss Goodwin.) [Georgetown, Tasmania, Australia] (Zanardini 1874: 490). Type: Miss Goodwin; MCVE (Womersley 2003: 186).
