Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Stichococcus is Stichococcus bacillaris Nägeli.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pseudomarvania ampulliformis (S.Handa) Eliáš & Neustupa.

Type Information
Holotype locality: Taishaku-kyo Gorge, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan; (Handa & al. 2003: 209) Holotype: Fig. 3 (epitype) 13 December 1987; From samples found growing on the bark of Cephalotaxus harringtoni (Knight ex Forbes) K. Koch; (Handa & al. 2003: 209, 203) Notes: Type culture [NIES-996= Handa-299(f)] has been registered in the Microbial Culture Collection of the National Institute for Environmental Studies, Japan.

Description
Vegetative cells unicellular, spherical or subspherical, 6-9 mm wide, 7-10 mm long. Chloroplast single, parietal, cup-shaped, without pyrenoids. Nucleus single. Asexual reproduction 'anisofission' by formation of two unequal-size daughter cells, often forming a short filament.

Habitat
The specimen, on which the holotype is based was isolated from samples found growing on the bark of Cephalotaxus harringtonia (Knight ex Forbes) K. Koch.
