The type species (holotype) of the genus Stichococcus is Stichococcus bacillaris Nägeli.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pseudostichococcus monallantoides var. exiguus (Gerneck) Pröschold & Darienko.

Type locality: Göttingen [Lower Saxony, German]; (Gerneck 1907: 262) Notes: Epitype (designated by Pröshold & Darienko 2020: 137): The strain SAG 379-4 permanently cryopreserved at SAG in metabolically inactive
stage.
