This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pseudostaurosira parasitica (W.Smith) E.Morales.

Type locality: "Fresh water: parasitic on Nitzschia sigmoidea. Queen's Park, Edinburgh, April and July 1854, Dr. Greville." [now generally known as Holyrood Park, Edinburgh, Scotland]; (Smith 1856: 19) Lectotype (designated by Morales & al. 2015): [R.K.] Greville; 9.vii.1854; BR; (Van de Vijver & al. 2022: 2) Notes: Syntype material in BR (Morales et al., 2015: figs 81-106).
