The type species (lectotype) of the genus Thecadinium is Thecadinium petasatum Kofoid & Skogsberg.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Carinadinium striatum (S.Yoshimatsu, S.Toriumi & J.D.Dodge) Hoppenrath.

Adjective (Latin), striped or fluted.
General Environment
This is a marine species.
Description
Cells thecate, elliptical in shape, 33-41 µm long, 23-30 µm deep, bilaterally flattened. Hypotheca three times longer than epitheca. Cingulum forming a left-handed spiral, displaced about two times its width without an overhang. Hypotheca with several strong spines at antapex. Nucleus situated on the dorsal side in central area of the hypotheca. Chloroplasts absent. Plate formula: 3', 6", 6c, 5s?, 5"', 1"".
