The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota plectens (Allender & Kraft) Kraft.

Nomenclatural note
De Clerck (2003) notes that this name is legitimate, albeit incorrect. It would be invalid if the specific name were invalid, but the fact that the specific name is illegitimate does not affect the legitimacy of the varietal name. On the other hand, the epithet bartayresii is not prioritable. That is, it cannot serve as a basionym.
