Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota cervicornis Kützing.

Type locality: Gossier, Pointe-à-Pitre, Vieux-Fort and Saintes, Guadeloupe, Caribbean Sea; (De Clerck 2003: 167) Type: BM; Coll. No. 159, 272, 555, 981, 1512, 1840 (De Clerck 2003: 167) Notes: De Clerck (2003) notes that specimens from the Mazé & Schramm collection in BM, bearing the same number as those mentioned in the original publication, belonged to D. cervicornis.

Adjective (Latin), dichotomous, having divisions always in pairs (Stearn 1973).
