Nomenclatural notes
The basionym is, with doubt, attributed to "Sphaerococcus linearis Kutz. Sp. Alg. 780, Tab. phyc. XVIII, 32, t. 91" both of which names are based on Rhodymenia linearis J. Agardh (q.v.) based on plants "in mari australi" which have not been examined. A latin diagnosis is also provided: "profunde subdichotoma laciniis linearibus augustis" and the forma name is treated as new here.
