The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Lithophyllum rugosum (Foslie) Me.Lemoine.

Type locality: Puerto Angosto, Iola Desolucion [= Desolation Island], Ildlandet [= Tierra del Fuego Archipelago], Chile; (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 459) Holotype: P. Dusén; 10.iv.1896; “på ebbstrandens stenar [= at low tide mark on stones]”; TRH; C16-3283 (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 459) Notes: Original" "It has been collected on the Fuegia. coast of the straits of Magellan, at Isla. Desola.cion, Puerto Angosto, on stones between titles. P. Dusén." (Foslie 1900: 67).
