The type species (lectotype) of the genus Sphaerococcus is Sphaerococcus coronopifolius Stackhouse.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gracilaria edulis (S.G.Gmelin) P.C.Silva.

Eponomy
Named for Eugène Vieillard (1819-1896), a French naval surgeon and naturalist who collected in New Caledonia and Tahiti and was director of the Jardin Botanique de Caen.

Taxonomic note
According to Millar & Prud'homme van Reine (2005: 546), this species appeas to be representative of Gracilaria edulis (S.Gmelin) Silva 1952. According to Gurgel & Fredericq (2004), the latter is a synonym of Hydropuntia edulis Gurgel & Fredericq. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
