Nomenclatural note
"When Bornet in Bornet & Thuret (1876: 26) described this species from the Mediterranean coast of France, he noted the strong similarity of his species with Callithamnion strictum C. Agardh and in the diagnosis pointed out that S. flabellatum differs from Callithamnion strictum in smaller size, a more compact habit, no constrictions at nodes and probably also in structure of cystocarps (still unknown in Ca. strictum). All that was later confirmed by Ardissone (1883: 302) who, however, transferred Ca. strictum to the genus Spermothamnion as S. strictum (C. Agardh) Ardissone maintaining it distinct from S. flabellatum, based on Bornet%u2019s (op. cit.) opinion." (Cormaci & al. 2023: 421). - (04 December 2023) - M.D. Guiry
