Type locality: Porte de Menton, Mediterranean France; (Billard & Fresnel 1986: 271) Holotype: Fig. 6 (epitype) (Billard & Fresnel 1986: 271) Notes: Isotype: NSW 763986.
Type culture: CCAP 1346/1, Culture Collection of Algae and Protozoa, SAMS Research Service Ltd. Dunstaffnage Marine Laboratory, Dunbeg, Argyll, PA37 1QA, UK. The culture also is AC125 at Algobank, University of Caen, France.
Cryopreserved culture: Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, PO Box 475, 180 McKown Point Road, West Boothbay Harbor, ME 04575 USA. The sample is permanently stored at -130°C.
Original culture of the type specimen collected in August 1980 ( Scott et al. 2008: 561).

Adjective (Latin), dark blue.
