Nomenclatural note
Tod Fairbanks (e-mail, November 2019) writes "I would like to suggest that Desmidium elongatum Wolle 1884 listed as a "U" and Desmidium longatum 1884 listed as a "P" are one in the same. I have attached the two descriptions from Wolle and the descriptions are nearly identical, the dimension are equal and the discovery date September 1883 in a pond at Brown's Mill are the same. Also, the distribution record, Brown's Mill, NJ would be considered part of the New Jersey Pine Barrens a fen/bog acidic water environment then and even today. Although Brown's Mill is more of a developed village with a small lake, which was likely the pond that was sampled by Wolle." - (04 November 2019) - M.D. Guiry
