The type species (lectotype) of the genus Bryopsis is Bryopsis pennata J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Bryopsis derbesioides V.J.Chapman.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), a sombre brown, but often used to indicate darkness of colour (Stearn 1973).
