Nomenclatural notes
New name for Ectocarpus variabilis (Saunders) G.M. Smith, non Ectocarpus variabilis Vickers. - (09 September 2007) - G.M. Guiry

Taxonomic note
This entity is listed in Abbott & Hollenberg (1976: 126) as a synonym of E. parvus (Sauders) Hollenberg, but, according to Silva (1979: 332) the two should probably be kept separate particularly as the latter was originally described as growing on rocks. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
