The type species (lectotype) of the genus Ceramium is Ceramium virgatum Roth.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gayliella flaccida (Harvey ex Kützing) T.O.Cho & L.M.McIvor.

Taxonomic note
"This species was described by Zanardini (1847: 223) from Venice (Italy). Frauenfeld (1855: 42) combined it under the genus Hormoceras Kützing as H. hospitans (Zanardini) Frauenfeld and recorded it from Primosten (Croatia). Ardissone (1871: 50) listed it among species "doubtful or not present in his collections". De Toni (1903: 1483) reported it with doubt among the synonyms of C. gracillimum Griffiths et Harvey." - (15 November 2023) - M.D. Guiry
