The type species (holotype) of the genus Navicula is Navicula tripunctata (O.F.Müller) Bory.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pinnularia hyperborea (Grunow) Ehrenberg.

Adjective (Latin), belonging to the extreme north, northern (Stearn 1973).
