Taxonomic note
18S rDNA sequencing results (Sáez et al. 2003) have shown that
Cruciplacolithus neohelis is very distinct from other coccolithophore
genera, alleviating some of the worries about the
placement of an extant taxon in a genus which otherwise includes
only extinct species. Its separation on the tree suggests
that its lineage evolved a long time ago (Jordan, Cros & Young 2004). - (13 April 2007) - G.M. Guiry
