Type locality: French Guiana: Cayenne ( Batrachospermum vagum var. guyanense) ; (INA 1996) Holotype: Batrachospermum vagum var. guyanense: Leprieur coll. No. 1108; PC; (Entwisle et al. 2009: 710)

Eponomy
Named "... in honor of French cryptogamist and soldier Jean Pierre François Camille Montagne (1784-1866), who first described the batrachospermalean flora of French Guiana, including this particular species."

Vis & Necchi (2021: 210) included Kumanoa tortuosa (Kumano) ET Johnston, PE Lim, and ML Vis (Phycologia 53:336, 2014) in the synonymy of Kumanoa montagnei Entwisle, ML Vis, WB Chiasson, Necchi, and AR Sherwood (J Phycol 45:710, 2009); however, Batrachospermum tortuosum S. Kumano (Bot. Mag. Tokyo 91: 101, fig. 4. 1978) is an earlier valid name with priority and thus the correct name for Kumanoa montagnei is Kumanoa tortuosa (Kumano) E.T.Johnston, P.-E.Lim & M.L.Vis assuming that the synonymy is correct. - (10 March 2010) - G.M.
