Type locality: "in stagnis submarinis ap. Messina (Siciliae)..." [Messina, Sicily]; (Borzì 1883: 23) Notes: Lectotype (designated by Darienko & Pröschold 2017): Fig. 4: 12 in Borzi (1883). Epitype (designated by Darienko & Pröschold 2017): The strain CCMP 2158 is permanently cryopreserved in a metabolically inactive state (cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen) in the CCMP, USA.
