The type species (lectotype) of the genus Fragilaria is Fragilaria pectinalis (O.F.Müller) Lyngbye.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Stauroforma exiguiformis (Lange-Bertalot) R.J.Flower, V.J.Jones & Round.
