The type species (lectotype) of the genus Achnanthes is Achnanthes adnata Bory.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Planothidium distinctum (Messikommer) Lange-Bertalot.

Gewinnung von Ausquetschmaterial aus ins Gewässer hineinragenden Phanerogamenwurzeln am Kliff” {Switzerland]; (Messikommer 1954: 32) Lectotype: BP; slide 2210 (Buczkó, Wojtal & Magyari 2013: 4) Notes: "Lectotype, designed here, illustrated in fig. 5; Messikommer’s original material sample Nr. 4, see above for further details; lectotype specimen located using England Finder H30/3 (Fig. 18) or at co-ordinates 30.8 and 108 with a Leica DM LB2 light microscope)."
