Nomenclatural notes
"The distribution of T. salina in Europe is rather limited, being mainly present on the French Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts in very salty to brackish wetlands (Beaubert et al., 2015; Borel, 2013; Citoleux et al., 2007; Desmots et al., 2011; Felzines and Lambert, 2012, 2016; Gernigon et al., 2014; Lafon and Lambert, 2020; Lambert et al., 2013). It is also observed in the same type of habitats in Greece, Sardinia & Sicily (Bla%u017Een%u02C7ci´c et al., 2006a; Becker, 2019; Lambert et al., 2014; Romanov et al., 2019). In Spain, except for a few localities on the Atlantic coast, most of the occurrences are inland brackish water sites (Cirujano, 1989; Cirujano and Medina, 2002; Cirujano et al. 2013; Comelles, 1982, 1986; Espinar et al. 1997; García Murillo et al., 2006). A record from Britain (Bryant and Stewart, 2011), based on a specimen stored in L, has been redetermined as T. glomerata (K. van de Weyer pers. comm.)." (Lambert & al. 2024). - (23 January 2025) - M.D. Guiry
"Tolypella salina is the only charophyte which is nationally protected in France (MEDDE, 2013). This was an important step towards the protection of certain vulnerable localities at the French littoral. In Spain T. salina is one of the rarest and most threatened charophyte species, being known only from a few locations. In the Eastern Adriatic, T. salina is considered as Critically Endangered (Blazencic et al., 2006b). As this species typically lives in salting basins - active as well as abandoned ones - where the salinity regime depends on human activity, it is threatened by all actions that change the hydroregime, especially with respect to the required dry period. Some former salting basins have been reconstructed to provide warm water for shellfish, fish or worm aquaculture or, alternatively, Salicornia sp. culti-vation, consequently making them unsuitable for T. salina. Other forms of habitat loss are complete drainage of former basins and wetlands for urban and industrial development as has occurred at the species locus classicus. It is important to promote the importance of the mosaic structure of salting areas with respect to the ecological conditions necessary for charophytes." (Lambert & al. 2024). - (23 January 2025) - M.D. Guiry

Distributional note
Thought to be extinct in Britain (Bryan & Stewart 2011: 765). - (11 February 2015) - M.D. Guiry
