Description

[We found in Antibes, on Dudresnaya purpurifera, a small alga with the shape of an Acrochoetium, whose spore forms by a process similar to that of Erythrotrichia. The segment in which it develops widens and becomes elliptical; then a small portion of the cellular contents separates laterally, in the form of a biconvex lens; its protoplasm becomes more granular, more opaque, and more colorful. At the same time, it enlarges and ends up occupying a significant portion of the cell cavity. At maturity, it escapes through a lateral opening and rounds into a sphere. As soon as the compression ceases, the portion of vegetative protoplasm in which the spore was, as it were, embedded quickly fills the void left by its exit.] G. Thuret gave this curious alga, which we found only twice, a few days apart, but in large abundance, the name of Rhodochaete pulchella, and I distributed it under this name to my correspondents. PI. II, fig. 1 to 3. Despite the great resemblance which exists in the mode of formation of the spores between the Rhodochaete and the Erythrotrichia, it is not entirely certain that these two genera belong to the same group. Indeed the chromatophores differ notably in the two plants; instead of the star-shaped chromatophore which is found in the Porphyreae, the cells of the Rhodochaete contain numerous parietal chromatophores in small oblong plates."]
