The type species (holotype) of the genus Gelidium is Gelidium corneum (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Type Information
Holotype locality: Protea Banks (Northern Edge), KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa; (Tronchin & Freshwater 2007: 336) Holotype: E.M. Tronchin; 5 February 2001; On turf-covered aeolianite reef outcrops in warm temperate water; -33 m depth; BOL; ET19 (Tronchin & Freshwater 2007: 336) Notes: Holotype: 2 thalli.

Description
Plants to 25 cm long; uprights compound pinnate (to four orders) with untidy appearance; axis flimsy, irregularly meandering and twisting, cylindrical and up to 1.1 mm wide basally, compressed to flattened and up to 1.5 mm wide distally; branches flattened, variable in length, subtended at broad angles (78ยบ, s =9.5); pinnae straight (0.5-) 0.8-1.5 (-2.0) mm apart with slight basl constrictions, 0.5 -3.5 (-6.0) mm long, shorter (c. 1-3 mm) along lower part of bearing branch, becoming longer and indeterminate along distal part; pinnules on average 544 microns (s = 53) wide, 201 microns (s = 11) thick; apices rounded, apical cell dome-shaped; margins entire except on lower axis and branches where they are notched; holdfast stoloniferous, prostrate branches producing brush-type attachment haptera. Vegetative structure consisting of outer cortex of small, isodiametric cells (3-7 microns in diameter), inner cortex of larger, angular cells (8.-11.0 x 5.5-10.5 microns with a mean length/width ratio of 1.5) and filamentous medulla (cells 13-26 microns in diameter); rhizines concentrated in inner cortex, 3-5 microns in diameter. Fertile structures borne terminally or subterminally on ultimate pinnules; tetrasporangia cruciate to decussate; cystocarps bilocular; spermatangia unknown.
