Taxonomic notes
Ballantine et al. (2011) consider the northern European (France, Britain, Ireland) records of this species to belong to a different species (L. bathyporum). - (14 Jul 2011) - Wendy Guiry

Habitat notes
Rhodoliths in subtidal maerl beds (to 27 m depth); crusts subtidal and epilithic, epizoic on dead or live molluscs, or epiphytic on Laminaria hyperborea; rarely in the lower intertidal on Atlantic coast (Hernandez-Kantun et al., 2015). - (8 Oct 2015) - Wendy Guiry

General environment
This is a marine species.

Description
Thick, dull chalky, yellowish, pink or lavender calcareous crusts forming irregular concretions, to 40 mm thick, margins ridged where crusts meet.

Habitat
On rock, lower intertidal semi-exposed and exposed pools, subtidal to 30 m., south-west coasts to Orkney Islands, common, especially in shallow subtidal. On the W and SW coasts of Ireland, this species is frequently associated with intertidal populations of the purple sea-urchin Paracentrotus lividus, the pink encrustations of the alga contrast beautifully with the purples and greens of the urchins, which frequently dominate exposed shore limestones.

Type information
Type locality: Sicily, Mediterranean (Philippi 1837: 388). Lectotype: on a snail shell. LD 943.10.34 (Woelkerling 1983: 315, figs 15-23). Notes:
