This is the type species (holotype) of the genus Biecheleriopsis.

The taxonomic or nomenclatural status (or both) of this entity is in some way unresolved and requires further investigation.
Type Information
Type locality: Adriatic Sea; (Moestrup, Lindberg & Daugbjerg 2009) Type: fig. 1: (Index Nominum Algarum) Notes: France: Nantes is cited as the type locality in INA. However, the name of the species suggests it is from the Adriatic Sea. Jang et al. (2015: 301) note that B adriatica was originally thought to be identical to Gymnodinium simplex (=Protodinium simplex), but it was recently re-described as a new genus and species by Moestrup et al. (2009), who obtained a culture isolated from the Adriatic Sea.The isolate was obtained from IFREMER, Nantes, France as Gymnodinium corii J. Schiller. It originates from the Adriatic Sea. Culture subsequently deposited at the Scandinavian Culture Centre for Algae and Protozoa and given strain number K-0968.
