Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Lemanea is Lemanea corallina Bory.

Status of Name
The taxonomic or nomenclatural status (or both) of this entity is in some way unresolved and requires further investigation.

Type Information
Type locality: Fuzhou, Fujian, China; (Xie, Shi & Wang 2004: 884) Holotype: "incognito"; Dec. 10, 1964; HBI; FK138 (Xie, Shi & Wang 2004: 886)

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), branched, bearing branches (usually many) (Stearn 1983).

General Environment
This is a freshwater species.

Description
Plant is small, densely caespitose, 1-3 cm long, attenuated upwards, and with no obvious stalk at the base; branches are dense, especially at the upper parts. Nodes may be obvious, 0.12-0.45 mm in diameter and internodes are 0.10- 0.25 mm in diameter. Carposporangia are large and elliptical being 80-100 µm in length, 25-60 µm in diameter and single. Spermatangia are in patches, sometimes in imperfect rings with 6-8 per node, sometimes in imperfect rings.

Taxonomic note
Lemanea crassa SL Xie and ZX Shi, Acta Bot Sinica 46:884 (2004); Lemanea ramosa SL Xie and ZX Shi, Acta Bot Sinica 46:884 (2004). Lemanea simplex CC Jao, Sinensia 12:272 (1941); and Lemanea sinica CC Jao, Sinensia 12:270 (1941). These four species are only known from the type localities and have numerous characteristics in common with each other and L. manipurensis and all five species are from Asia; these species have been differentiated by a combination of plant size, degree of branching and spermatangia in papillae/interrupted rings or contiguous rings, but further molecular and morphological research is required to verify the uniqueness of each; if they are determined to be synonymous, L. sinica has nomenclatural priority. - (15 April 2022) - M.D. Guiry
