This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Shackletoniella antarctica (W.West & G.S.West) Strunecky, Raabova & Bernardova.

Adjective (Latin), of or pertaining to the Antarctic (Stearn 1983).

General Environment
This is a freshwater species.

Description
Solitary filaments or large macroscopic, greyishbrown, massive mats. Filaments nearly straight or irregularly coiled, often oriented ± parallel; tri chomes not constricted at cross walls, pale greyish bluegreen, 0.5-0.7(1) µm wide, not attenuated towards ends; sheaths indistinct, confluent, or distinctly de veloped around individual trichomes, colourless, sometimes forming gelatinous mass with attached small detritus particles. Cells up to 2× longer than wide, mainly up to 1.8 µm long; apical cells rounded or conical rounded.
