This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gymnodinium subsalsum (Biecheler) Sh.Murray & Guiry.

Nomenclatural note
"The designation "Gymnodinium pellucidum (E.C.Herdman) Flø Jørgensen & Sh.Murray" (in Flø Jørgensen & al. 2004: 362), nom. inval. for Amphidinium pellucidum E.C.Herdman would have been illegitimate as the name was previously occupied by Gymnodinium pellucidum Wulff (1919: 107, pl. 1: fig. 2), but the intended combination was invalid as the place of publication of the basionym was not indicated by the authors as required by ICN Art. 41.5 (Turland & al. 2018). The name Gymnodinium venator was proposed for the designation "Gymnodinium pellucidum (E.C.Herdman) Flø Jørgensen & Sh.Murray" in a Corrigendum (Flø Jørgensen & Murray 2004: 1181) to avoid publishing a later homonym. However, this latter name while valid, is superfluous (although not illegitimate as it was formed from a legitimate generic name; Art. 52.4), but incorrect as it included in synonymy a valid, legitimate and thus available name, Amphidinium subsalsum Biecheler (1952: 26, fig.
