The type species (holotype) of the genus Mastophora is Mastophora licheniformis Decaisne.

Holotype locality: Suva Lagoon, patch reef, Fiji; (Keats et al. 2009: 413) Holotype: D. Keats; 20 November 1994; very common on rubble at 5-15 m; UWC; 94/1332 (Keats et al. 2009: 413)

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
Occurs on all parts of windward and leeward reefs, as well as on patch reefs, from the intertidal to at least 45 m depth; it is uncommon on rocky and attached coral substrata, but is one of the most abundant corallines on coral rubble (Keats et al. 2009).
