Type locality: "Mediterranean Sea, Bay of Augusta (Sicily)"; (Gargiulo, Furnari & Cormaci 1991: 632) Holotype: female gametophyte with cystocarps (fig. 2): September 1976; at 10 m depth, growing on Posidonia oceanica; MS; 34038a (Gargiulo, Furnari & Cormaci 1991: 632) Notes: MS 34038b, tetrasporangial plants (fig. 3).

Noun (singular possessive) (Latinised), in honour of Michael D. Guiry, Irish botanist.
