The type species (holotype) of the genus Hapalospongidion is Hapalospongidion gelatinosum De A.Saunders.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Mesospora pangoensis (Setchell) Chihara & J.Tanaka.

Type locality: near Blacklock's Wharf, Pago Pago Harbor [Samoa: Tutuila Island]; (Setchell 1924: 168) Holotype (with sporangia): June 1, 1920; crustose on basalt cobbles; UC (Setchell's collection); 1001 (Setchell 1924: 168) Notes: no. 1001 corresponds with fig. 33:3. UC 221298 (INA; Poong et al., 2017).
