Taxonomic note
According to Millar & Prud'homme van Reine (2005: 543, 544), this species is conspecific with M. obtusata (Labillardière) J. Agardh 1852. However, Nelson et al. (2013: 435) conclude that there is a single species of Melanthalia (M. vieillardii with M. fastigiata as a synonym) present in New Caledonia, and that the Australian clade is distinct from New Caledonian species. - (04 October 2013) - G.M.
