The type species (lectotype) of the genus Ceramium is Ceramium virgatum Roth.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ceramium secundatum Lyngbye.

Adjective (Latin), red (Stearn 1983).

Nomenclatural notes
Mediterranean authors listing C. rubrum var. barbatum, followed G. Feldmann-Mazoyer (1941: 333) who attributed this variety to “(Kützing) J.Agardh”. However J.Agardh never made such a combination . Moreover, C. barbatum Kützing (1842: 740) is illegitimate being a later homonym of C. barbatum Duby (1833: 19). Accordingly, as G.Feldmann-Mazoyer supplied a description, the trinomial should be treated as a new name: C. rubrum var. barbatum G. Feldmann-Mazoyer (see Furnari et al., 1999). - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
