Nomenclatural note
Invalid when first introduced (based on an invalid name). Validation attemped by Huisman & Guiry (2017) was also invalid as vaidation of both Antithamnion subcorticatum and Balliella subcorticata was attempted. Validated in Huisman (2018: 380, fig. 109 G-I) by reference to type, provision of validating description and illustrations. - (14 February 2015) - M.D. Guiry
Taxonomic note
May be closely related to Balliella repens Huisman & Kraft (see Athanasiadis, 1996: 43) but regarded as separate by Huisman & Guiry (2017:) as "... [it] has a more extensive prostrate system and more than one tetrasporangium can occur per bearing cell, whereas tetrasporangia in B. subcorticata are generally borne singly." - (11 May 2006) - G.M.
