Nomenclatural note
Although this name first appeared in Durieu de Maisonneuve's Flora d'Algérie Atlas (pl. 39: fig.1), it was not accompanied by a description; validated by analytical figures (ICN Art. 38.7 "For the purpose of Art. 38.5, prior to 1 January 1908, an illustration with analysis (see Art. 38.9 and 38.10) is acceptable in place of a written description or diagnosis."). "The publication of Charaimperfecta was given effect by draw-ings without accompanying text. It was certainly planned to publish a text but Durieu%u2019s publication of the "Exploration scientifique de l'Algérie pendant les années 1840, 1841, 1842" remained fragmentary. Also, we do not know the exact date of the publication of plate 39. Stafleu and Cowan (1976) give "1848/9" as publication date." (Soulié-Märsche & Muller 2024). - (07 December 2008) - G.M. Guiry
Distributional note
"Chara imperfecta was long considered a cryptic species, known only from its type locality in Algeria (Durieu, 1846-1869), and from a few sites in western France (Rochebrune, 1862). Braun and Nordstedt (1882) reported the species from South Spain (Province of Malaga and Granada). At the beginning of the twentieth century it was found near the Atlantic coast in West France (Corillion, 1962;Hy, 1913) where it could not be found recently. Rediscovered in Spain (Comelles, 1984), Chara imper-fecta was recently identified also in South France (Soulié-Märsche, 2003; Mouronval et al., 2015) as well as in a new locality in Algeria (Muller et al., 2017). It is known from Morocco and Spain (Guerlesquin, 1962; Cirujano et al., 2008, Rodrigo and Alonso-Guillén, 2016), South France (Mouronval et al., 2015) and from one locality in Portugal (Algarve) (Mendes, 1947). One exceptional occurrence was mentioned by Blazencic et al. (2006) in Macedonia. At present, Chara imperfecta appears restricted to the western Mediterranean. The map (Fig. 39.4) summarizes all known localities of Chara imperfecta in Europe." (Soulié-Märsche & Muller 2024). - (13 January 2025) - M.D. Guiry
