Nomenclatural note
John et al. (2004) cite the authority for this species as (Grateloup ex J. Agardh) Maggs & Halos; this is incorrect as the name supplied by Grateloup was "Mertensia decomposita Grateloup" and the name should be solely credited to J. Agardh. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry

Distributional note
Known in Ireland and Britain from only one site in Co. Donegal, Ireland (Maggs & Hommersand 1993, p. 161, fig. 52 A-B). "Finally, agreeing with Gómez Garreta et al. (2001: 446), we think that Mediterranean records of Callithamnion decompositum J. Agardh [= Compsothamnion decompositum (J. Agardh) Maggs et L'Hardy-Halos, taxon excludendum], are misidentifications with A. tripinnatum. Consequently, we consider Compsothamnion decompositum as a taxon excludendum." (Cormaci & al. 2023: 312, 366). - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
