Nomenclatural note
"The basionym of this species (Callithamnion truncatum Meneghini) was described by Meneghini (1844: 288) from Dalmatia (Croatia). Nägeli (1862: 344), proposed the combination Comspothamnion truncatum (Meneghini) Nägeli, but invalidly according to Art. 36.1 of ICN (Turland et al., 2018) because he didn%u2019t consider Compsothamnion as a genus, but a subgenus of Callithamnion (see Dixon, 1960: 300). The same Dixon (op. cit.) stated that the first validly published combination of Ca. truncatum under the genus Compsothamnion was that by Preda (1908: 141). In fact, he thought the previous one proposed by De Toni (1903: 1356) was invalid having been proposed with doubt. However, according to Art. 36.1 of ICN (Turland et al., 2018) the indication of a doubt doesn't invalidate the proposal. Therefore, the combination Co. truncatum should be credited to (Meneghini) De Toni (op. cit.). Meneghini's species was ignored by Ardissone (1883), while Hauck (1885: 522) listed it, with no comment, in his appendix as a synonym of Ca. hirtellum [= Aglaothamnion scopulorum, see]. We agree with Gómez Garreta et al. (2001: 447) in considering Compsothamnion truncatum as a taxon inquirendum." (Cormaci & al. 2023: 366). - (23 November 2023) - M.D. Guiry
