The type species (holotype) of the genus Carpopeltis is Carpopeltis phyllophora (Hooker f. & Harvey) F.Schmitz.

Type locality: Geographe Bay, W. Australia; (Womersley & Lewis 1994: 173) Lectotype: Herb. Agardh, LD; 23065 (Womersley & Lewis 1994: 173) Notes: Isolectotype in MEL (606034).

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
On rough-water coasts, 2-30 m deep; thick sponge cover over most of the thallus (Womersley & Lewis 1994: 175).

Nomenclatural note
Womersley & Lewis (1994: 175) note that C. spongeaplexus is clearly allied to Carpopeltis and not to Codiophyllum. Silva et al. (1996: 189) note that a new name was required because of the prior existence of Carpopeltis decipiens (Harvey) Schmitz (Harvey) De Toni. - (10 June 2009) - G.M. Guiry
