Nomenclatural note
"Callithamnion polyacanthum, basionym of this species, was described by Kützing (1849: 648) from Kilkee (Ireland) and later illustrated in his Tabulae Phycologicae (Kützing, 1861: pl. 83/II). In the Mediterranean Sea, it was listed by Hauck (1882: 73) among the synonyms of Antithamnion plumula var. crispum [= Pt. crispum], by Ardissone (1883: 79) among the synonyms of Ca. plumula s.l. [because Ardissone (op. cit.) listed among the synonyms of Ca. plumula also other species like Ceramium crispum and Callithamnion bebbii now considered as distinct taxa each other], by De Toni (1903: 1401) and Preda (1908: 124) among the synonyms of Antithamnion plumula [= Pt. plumula s.l.]. Afterwards, it was no more cited until Athanasiadis (1996: 58) considered Pt. polyacanthum a distinct species and lectotypified its basionym Ca. polyacanthum with the above illustration by Kützing, 1861: pl. 83/II, since original material was lacking. Moreover, Athanasiadis (op. cit.: 61), based on both literature data and the study of some herbarium specimens, acknowledged the occurrence of Pt. polyacanthum from Banyuls sur Mer (France), the island of Kephallinia (Greece) and Piran (Croatia). It should be noted that, in addition to the aforementioned records, the presence of this species in the Adriatic Sea is confirmed based on the review of some photos (never published) (see Table 43, photos 4 and 5) of a specimen collected at Pugnochiuso (Promontory of Gargano, Italy), erroneously reported by Cecere et al. (2000: 342) as P. crispum." (Cormaci & al. 2023: 289). - (16 November 2023) - M.D. Guiry
