According to Wynne & Furnari (2014), the name is invalid as a type was not designated; however, the author clearly says "Typus in P. D. herbario.". - (16 April 2014) - M.D. Guiry

Wynne & Furnari (2014: 523) add: "Treating this taxon as valid, Pedersen (1984) pointed out that the justification for the erection of this genus is doubtful because the only distinction between Phaeostromatella and Hecatonema is the apparent lack of sheathed true hairs in the former genus." - (16 April 2014) - M.D. Guiry
