The type species (holotype) of the genus Tovellia is Tovellia coronata (Wołoszyńska) Moestrup, K.Lindberg & Daugbjerg.

Type locality: Paldang Dam Lake, GyeongGi-Do, Korea (37°29'N, 127°26'E); (Li et al. 2015: 69) Holotype: Library of Marine Samples, Korean Ocean Research Institute, Geode; SEM stub LZ201303-3 (Li et al. 2015: 69, figs 7-15) Notes: Isotype: SEM stub LZ201303-3 deposited at same location as holotype (fig. 23).
